Deborah (Self) Scata (74) of Portland, CT, longtime resident of South Meriden, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, May 9th. Throughout her 74 years, Deborah touched the lives of countless individuals as a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, wife, grandmother, and friend.
Deborah was born in Wallingford on March 10th, 1950 to the late Bertram and Rita Self. She is predeceased by her brother, Gary. She is survived by her loving sister Hope (Jerry) Damon of East Hampton, and niece Nichole (Anthony) Boucino, as well as her great niece and nephew Ty and Brenna, all of Madison, CT. Also, many aunts, uncles and cousins, and a very special family friend, Margaret Dubuc.
Deborah is also survived by her devoted husband Octavius ”Artie” Scata of 35 years. He stood by Deborah's side bringing comfort until the end. She is predeceased by Octavius’ parents, Joseph and Lena Scata, and sister-in-law, Connie (Rich) Dunn. Her surviving family also includes her brother-in-law Joseph Scata, and sister-in-law Phyllis Sundell, both of Portland, CT; step-children, Linda Scata of Manchester; CT, Dyana McCracken of Columbia, SC; Donna (Paul) LeGrand of Lyndonville, VT; Michelle (Tony) Pistorino of Middletown, CT; step-grandchildren include: Rebekah Dagny of Tucson, AZ; Isaac Lohnes of Manchester, CT; Kyle and Sara McCracken of Columbia, SC; Jacob McCracken of Columbia, SC; Brianna Treadwell of Dallas, TX; Luke and Shawna Treadwell of Westford, VT; Sophia and Gianna Pistorino of Middletown CT. and a step-great-grandchild, Harrison Treadwell of Westford, VT.
Deborah attended schools in Wallingford, and graduated from Lyman Hall high school in 1969. She worked for Barkers, Bob’s Dept. Store, and Napiers Jewelers. However, it was her role as a crossing guard in South Meriden that truly captured her heart. She had a special connection with the children she crossed, who all loved her and showered her with hugs.
Known for her feisty, yet loving nature, she was passionate about animals and had a great love for her dogs: Fluffy, Dusty, Shannon, Princess, Shadow, Koda, and Tobias, to name a few. She was a huge fan of music and favorited Elvis and the Beach Boys. Her hobbies included going to the beach and swimming with Ty and Brenna. Her and her husband loved spending vacation time attending Nascar races. She considered her close family her friends, and loved going out with all of them.
Her family will receive family and friends at the Lastrina Family Funeral Home, 491 High St. Middletown on Tuesday, May 21st, from 5-7pm . A Mass of Christian burial will be at St. Sebastian Church on Wednesday, May 22nd at 10:00. Burial will follow in St. Sebastion Cemetery.
